Tax Refund Calculator (2026 Tax Return)

Estimate your federal tax refund — or what you’ll owe — for your 2026 tax return, the one you’ll file in early 2027. Enter your W-2 wages and the federal tax withheld, add any children or dependents, and the calculator applies the 2026 standard deduction, brackets, child tax credit, and earned income credit.

It also includes the new deductions for tips, overtime, and taxpayers 65 and older, which reduce taxable income even if you don’t itemize. Every figure comes from the IRS’s official 2026 amounts.

Earned income credit is computed by formula and can differ from the IRS tables by a few dollars. Married filing separately isn’t supported. Figures use official 2026 IRS amounts (Rev. • Internal Revenue Code §24 (child tax credit)

The 15% refundability rate over $2,500 of earned income, the $200,000 / $400,000 phase-out thresholds, and the work-eligible SSN requirement added by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

  • PATH Act refund timing

  • What this estimate leaves out

Self-employment income, itemized deductions, education credits, the premium tax credit (which for 2026 requires full repayment of excess advance payments), and state taxes. Marketplace insurance customers should expect their result to differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my tax refund calculated?

Your refund is the federal tax you paid during the year (withholding and estimated payments) plus any refundable credits, minus the tax you actually owe after credits. If you paid more than you owe, the IRS refunds the difference; if less, you have a balance due.

When will I get my 2026 tax refund?

The IRS typically opens filing season in late January (it opened January 26 in 2026) and issues most e-filed, direct-deposit refunds in under 21 days. By law, refunds on returns claiming the earned income credit or additional child tax credit can’t be issued before February 15; in 2026 most arrived by early March. The IRS has phased out paper refund checks, so include direct-deposit details.

How much is the child tax credit for 2026?

Up to $2,200 per qualifying child under 17, with up to $1,700 per child refundable as the additional child tax credit (15% of earned income above $2,500). It phases out by $50 per $1,000 of income over $200,000 ($400,000 joint). You, or at least one spouse on a joint return, and each child need a work-eligible Social Security number.

Who qualifies for the earned income credit in 2026?

Working people with low to moderate income. The maximum 2026 credit is $664 with no children, $4,427 with one, $7,316 with two, and $8,231 with three or more. It phases out completely at $19,540 to $62,974 of income for single filers and $26,820 to $70,244 for joint filers, depending on children. Investment income over $12,200 disqualifies you, and without children you must be 25 to 64.

Why does the calculator say I owe?

Too little tax was withheld for your income — common with two jobs, side income, or a W-4 that hasn’t been updated. Use the W-4 withholding calculator to adjust your withholding so you break even next year.
