No Tax on Car Loan Interest Explained
Deduct up to $10,000 a year of interest on a loan for a new U.S.-assembled vehicle in 2025–2028. Who qualifies, the income limits, and what the deduction saves.
The short version
- For tax years 2025–2028 you can deduct up to $10,000 a year of interest on a car loan — even with the standard deduction.
- The loan must be taken out after 2024 to buy a new vehicle with final assembly in the U.S., for personal use.
- Used cars, leases, and business vehicles don’t qualify.
- The deduction shrinks by $200 per $1,000 of income over $100,000 ($200,000 joint) and is gone at $150,000 ($250,000 joint).
- For a typical $40,000 loan, it’s worth roughly $300 to $600 a year in federal tax.
For years, interest on a personal car loan was simply a cost of borrowing — never a tax deduction. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act changed that for 2025 through 2028: if you finance a new, American-assembled vehicle, you can deduct up to $10,000 of the interest each year. The catch is in the details, and for many buyers the real saving is a few hundred dollars a year.
What the deduction covers
You can deduct interest paid during the year on a loan that meets all of these tests. Miss one and none of the interest counts.
- The loan was taken out after December 31, 2024.
- It was used to buy the vehicle and is secured by a lien on it.
- The vehicle is new — you are its first owner. Used cars don’t qualify.
- Final assembly took place in the United States.
- It is a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup truck, or motorcycle under 14,000 pounds, bought for personal use.
Leases are out, even though a lease payment includes a finance charge. Where a car was assembled is printed on its window sticker and can be looked up from the VIN, which you also have to report on your tax return.
You don’t have to itemize
Like the new deductions for tips and overtime, this one is claimed on Schedule 1-A and reduces taxable income on top of the standard deduction. That matters, because most households take the standard deduction and would otherwise get nothing from a new itemized deduction. It lowers federal income tax only — it doesn’t change state taxes unless your state follows the federal rule.
The income phase-out
The deduction is reduced by $200 for every $1,000 — or part of $1,000 — of modified adjusted gross income above $100,000, or $200,000 on a joint return. The $10,000 cap disappears completely at $150,000 single and $250,000 joint. Because the reduction comes off your actual deduction, a modest amount of interest is wiped out much sooner.
| Income (single) | Reduction | Deduction on $2,581 of interest |
|---|---|---|
| $90,000 | $0 | $2,581 |
| $100,000 | $0 | $2,581 |
| $105,000 | $1,000 | $1,581 |
| $110,500 | $2,200 | $381 |
| $125,000 | $5,000 | $0 |
What it’s actually worth
A deduction saves your top tax rate times the amount deducted. Take a $40,000 loan at 7% for five years with payments starting in January 2026, for a single filer earning $85,000 — squarely in the 22% bracket.
| Tax year | Interest paid | Deductible | Federal tax saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $2,581 | $2,581 | $568 |
| 2027 | $2,080 | $2,080 | $458 |
| 2028 | $1,543 | $1,543 | $340 |
| Total | $6,204 | $6,204 | $1,366 |
That is real money, but it doesn’t make an expensive loan cheap: you still pay the other 78% of the interest. Hitting the $10,000 cap takes a big loan at a high rate — even $80,000 at 9% over six years runs about $6,800 of interest in the first year.
Don’t let the deduction pick the car
Saving $500 a year in tax won’t make up for a car that strains your budget. Decide what you can afford first, then check whether the deduction applies.
Refinancing and other edge cases
- Paying cash: there is no interest, so there is nothing to deduct.
- Refinancing: a refinance of a qualifying loan generally keeps qualifying, but only on the amount you originally borrowed — cash-out amounts don’t count.
- Business use: a vehicle bought for business is handled under the regular business-expense rules instead.
- Married couples: the $10,000 cap is per return, not per person.
Run your own numbers
Your saving depends on the loan size, rate, when payments start, and where your income falls against the phase-out. Enter your loan and income to see the deduction for each tax year through 2028.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is car loan interest tax deductible in 2026?
Yes, if the loan was taken out after 2024 to buy a new vehicle assembled in the U.S. for personal use. Up to $10,000 of interest a year is deductible for 2025 through 2028, whether or not you itemize.
Does a used car qualify for the car loan interest deduction?
No. The vehicle must be new — its original use has to start with you. Used vehicles and leases are excluded.
What is the income limit for deducting car loan interest?
The deduction starts shrinking at $100,000 of modified AGI ($200,000 joint), losing $200 for each $1,000 over, and is fully gone at $150,000 ($250,000 joint).
Can I deduct interest on a loan I took out in 2024?
No. Only loans taken out after December 31, 2024 qualify, even if you’re still paying interest on an older loan in 2026.
