What personal loan rates look like right now

There is no single average rate, because each benchmark measures something different. The Federal Reserve reports banks’ most common 24-month personal loan rate at 11.90% (Q3 2026, released Oct. 7, 2026). Bankrate’s survey of the largest banks, for a borrower with a 700 FICO score, averaged 12.55% on Oct. 14, 2026. Online lenders — which serve a wider range of credit — offer more: the credit-score table above shows NerdWallet’s averages. Across major lenders, advertised APRs run from about 5.96% to 35.99%.

Watch for the origination fee

Many online lenders charge an origination fee of 1% to 10% of the loan (up to 12% at some), usually subtracted from the money you receive. With a 5% fee, a $100,000 loan deposits only $95,000 in your account — to end up with the full $100,000, you would need to borrow about $105,263. The fee is included in the APR, which is why you should compare loans by APR rather than interest rate. Several banks and some online lenders charge no origination fee at all.

Is a $100,000 personal loan the right tool?

A personal loan makes the most sense when it replaces more expensive debt or funds a one-time cost at a lower rate than the alternatives. Consolidating credit card balances can cut your rate sharply — model it with the credit card payoff calculator and read whether debt consolidation is worth it. For home projects, a home equity line may be cheaper if you have equity: compare in HELOC vs. home equity loan vs. personal loan. Before applying, check where the new payment leaves your debt-to-income ratio.

  • Truth in Lending Act (TILA) — APR disclosure

Lenders must disclose the APR, which folds in certain fees, making it the right figure to compare loan offers and to enter here.

  • Standard installment-loan amortization

Uses the same fixed-rate amortization engine as our mortgage and auto loan calculators, so payment and interest figures are directly comparable across loan types.

  • Federal Reserve G.19 consumer credit release

The bank benchmark rate (11.90%, 24-month personal loans at commercial banks, Q3 2026) is from the Federal Reserve’s G.19 release of October 7, 2026 — an unweighted average of each bank’s most common rate.

  • Rates by credit score — NerdWallet and Bankrate

Credit-tier APRs are NerdWallet’s averages of offers to pre-qualified users (updated Oct. 1, 2026); the large-bank average is the Bankrate Monitor for a 700-FICO, $5,000, 3-year loan (Oct. 14, 2026). We never mix sources within one table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the monthly payment on a $100,000 loan?

At 12% APR, a $100,000 loan costs $3,321.43 a month over 3 years or $2,224.44 over 5 years. At 8% it is $3,133.64 (3 years) or $2,027.64 (5 years); at 20% it is $3,716.36 or $2,649.39.

What is the payment on a $100,000 loan at 8% for 5 years?

$2,027.64 a month for 60 months. You would pay $21,658 in interest, $121,658 in total.

How much interest will I pay on a $100,000 loan?

At 12% APR, about $19,572 over 3 years or $33,467 over 5 years. Longer terms lower the monthly payment but increase total interest, because you carry the balance longer.

What credit score do I need for a $100,000 personal loan?

Many online lenders accept scores in the 600s, but the rate depends heavily on your score. As of Oct. 1, 2026, NerdWallet reported average offered APRs of 15.22% for excellent credit (720+) and 31.66% for bad credit (below 630). Loans above $50,000 are available from fewer lenders and usually require strong credit and income.

How much income do I need for a $100,000 loan?

Lenders look mainly at your debt-to-income ratio — total monthly debt payments divided by gross monthly income — and many prefer it below about 36%. If this loan were your only debt, its $2,224 payment (12%, 5 years) would be 36% of a $74,148 annual income; with other debts you would need more.
